Question by Slim: Could my supposed “asthma” really be an undiagnosed heart problem?

For years I’ve been suffering from attacks of fatigue, horrible chest and throat pain, and shortness of breath that has lasted up to an hour when I exert myself. It’s really scary; I remember the worse bout was in my sophomore year of high school. I was forced to run )not jog, full out RUN) an extra lap around the track in PE or else I would fail the course, and it took me until the end of the next class to stop shaking and catch my breath, and have my heart stop racing. I thought I was going to pass out, or worse, but nobody believes me when I try to tell them how bad it is.

I’ve been to doctors about it, and most argue that I have asthma or acid reflux, or that I’m just not in shape. However, inhalers never helped me and neither did other medications I tried, and I know it isn’t heartburn, because I have that too, occasionally. Also, while I may not be in shape now, I was when the problem started, and I fell out of shape because of it, so I don’t think that’s the cause.

Because of my age (I’m 19 now) nobody ever considered my heart to be the problem. Could that be the case? I only have trouble when I exert myself, like when I’m running. I’m good for about forty seconds, and then I crash.

yes you need to keep trying different doctors. get a 2nd, 3rd, 4th opinion. i am currently planning on suing my mothers doctor for malpractice. and also i have a friend that recently died and she was only 28 from a heart problem. So the doctors are idiots.

    Not a chance.
Your “chest pain” is most likely from the inflammation in the lungs, keeping them from doing their job. That’s quite common in severe asthma, and it’s also possible that you just haven’t found the inhaler right for you.

Since you say several doctors concur you have asthma, your only other choice is to try and see a cardiac specialist to rule this out, and it will be expensive (about $ 200, just for the office visit, NOT INCLUDING the tests they will do). They may refuse to see you on the basis of your age and history if you don’t get referred, because 19 year olds simply don’t have heart problems unless they are drug addicts or have a congenital heart defect.
